A play date is when you and another parent set up a day and time for your children to play together. This allows young children to get socialization skills while being supervised by a parent.
A play date can be with two or more children but they are often a small group. The activities are usually unstructured, like outdoor play at a park. Parents can stay for a play date and use that time to form their own friendships and parental alliances. Or you can trade off playdates with the other parent to be able to get household errands done more easily without your little one. Play dates are a recent invention of modern parents who would like to organize their children’s down time. In a world we can no longer trust our young children are safe to play outside with neighborhood kids, parents have started to use the playdate to help kids enjoy the company of friends. They also allow kids to do things together as some playdates are organized by their parents to go somewhere interesting like museums, playgrounds, etc. |
